Swissair Flight SR111, Halifax, 2SEP1998
It all looked like a normal day, on this Thursday morning, 3rd Sept. 1998, Swiss local time. I was at the railway station in Bassersdorf, to take the train to Zurich Airport, and it was 6 o’clock. A Qualiflyer Group meeting with members of Swissair, Sabena, TAP Air Portugal and further airlines was planned at Brussels Airport. The meeting was about a joint IT project, called SAMS, and I was the Swissair representative. A young friend of mine, approx. 16 years old, approached me at the railway station while I was waiting for the S-Bahn, asking: “Thomas, have you heard about the crash of Swissair 111 in Halifax?” and I yelled: “No! C’mon!”. It was true! 3rd Sept. was the day which changed every Swissair employee’s life! Despite of all I headed for my meeting in Brussels and boarded a Swissair Airbus 320 at ZRH airport. I was welcomed by very compassionate airline colleagues in Brussels, and the meeting was held more or less in silence … I returned to Zurich on the same day … things simply weren’t the same anymore. Never again.
The question is: Why did it happen? Swissair was supposed to be the safest airline apart from El Al.
To see my personal conclusion of this tragedy go to the bottom of this post.

My personal conclusion. (See also http://www.ethomas.ch/photo5.htm – Swissair: Oberste Grundsätze / Swissair Core Values):
The tragedy of SR111 was a sign of God for repentance.
Swissair had the chance to repent. But they didn’t.
Over the last 10 or 15 years Swissair became a profane and arrogant company.
Ethical and moral values which I could still discern when I entered the company back in 1985, were very soon replaced by money-mad, esoteric and typically American-like hedonistic fun values.
As we all know, the Swissair era ended with the inglorious “Swissair Grounding” in October 2001.
